International Performance Research (MAIPR) - Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

Overview

The Erasmus Mundus MA in International Performance Research (MAIPR) is a 16-month programme aimed at students with a particular interest and/or background in the performing arts, therefore those who may wish to pursue a career in or add value to already existing skills in aspects of arts practice or pursue an academic career through advanced study, perhaps leading to a Ph.D.

The ideal candidate has a strong academic background and also experience with creative practice in theatre and/or performance. You may be in your final year of an undergraduate degree or have been working in a performance-related profession or area. The current MAIPR intakes are truly international, made up of students from all continents (except Antartica!) We have students who have entered straight after finishing their undergraduate degrees in performance-related disciplines and others who have worked as directors, choreographers, curators, dancers and actors. You should bear in mind, however, that MAIPR is not a practical training programme. What it will do is help you develop and enhance your theoretical knowledge about performance-related issues, and it will certainly add value to your already existing skills base.

Funded by the European Commission, the MAIPR from autumn 2011 will be offered by four internationally renowned academic institutions:

The University of Warwick in the UK; the Universiteit van Amsterdam (the University of Amsterdam) in The Netherlands; the Univerzitet Umetnosti u Beogradu (University of Arts Belgrade) in Serbia; and the Helsingin Yliopisto (the University of Helsinki) in Finland.

Scholarship

Category A scholarships (€34,000) are aimed at covering all the costs of the programme, therefore fees, travel and living expenses over 16 months. For 2012-13, we will be awarding the following number of scholarships:

7 scholarships for eligible third-country applicants (therefore those whose nationality and place of abode are outside of the EU/EEA/EFTA area).
3 additional scholarships may become available to applicants from the following three areas: West Balkans and Turkey (1 scholarship); Tunisia and Egypt (1 scholarship); Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova or Ukraine (1 scholarship). The MAIPR Consortium, however, is not yet in a position to confirm if we are getting these scholarships; further advice will be uploaded in due course.

Applicants must have lived, studied and/or worked for LESS THAN a cumulative period of 12 months within the EU/EEA/EFTA area as at 31 January 2012. After the € 12 000 programme fee has been deducted from the EM scholarship, you will receive € 24 000. This amount is made up as follows:

€ 8 000 travel and installation allowance
€ 16 000 monthly stipend

The above will usually be paid in 16 x monthly instalments of € 1 500. The first payment will be made shortly after arrival at your home university.

Category B scholarships (€17,000) are considered as financial contributions rather than full scholarships. For 2012-13 we will be awarding the following number of scholarships: 5 scholarships for eligible EU/EEA/EFTA applicants, also third-country applicants who have lived, studied and/or worked for MORE THAN a cumulative period of 12 months within the EU/EEA/EFTA area as at 31 January 2012. After the programme fee has been deducted from the EM scholarship, an EU student will receive € 8 000 living allowance a €3 000 travel and installation allowance. This will be paid at a rate of €687.50.

EM scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. It is therefore important that your MAIPR application is as strong as possible as competition for the scholarships is very strong. You should also bear in mind that you may be accepted onto the MAIPR programme but not be awarded a scholarship. Remember: if your application for the 2012-13 MAIPR is received after the 3rd-January 2012 deadline or it is incomplete on that date, unfortunately we cannot enter you into the EM scholarship competition.

Eligibility

Students with a particular interest and/or background in the performing arts, therefore those who may wish to pursue a career in or add value to already existing skills in aspects of arts practice or pursue an academic career through advanced study, perhaps leading to a Ph.D. You need to demonstrate that you have good enough English to study. This is usually done by taking one of the University of Warwick`s accepted language tests, as follows: IELTS (British Council International Testing System) Passing score of at least 7; or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Passing score of at least 620 (paper based) or 260 (computer based) or 105 (internet-based iBT)

You need to request the application form from the University of Warwick`s Student Recruitment department, via student.recruitment@warwick.ac.uk . If you choose this option, it is your responsibility to make sure that the completed application form and all the required support documents are sent to Postgraduate Admissions in enough time to arrive by the relevant MAIPR deadline. You must also include the application fee (Warwick`s Postgraduate Admissions levy a non-refundable application handling fee for all taught postgraduate courses, including the MAIPR. One scholarship is offered each year for enrollment in the Stanford Sloan Master`s Program, a 10 ½ month, full-time program leading to the degree of Master of Science in Management.

The Erasmus Mundus master`s programme in Systems Biology (euSYSBIO) is a cooperation between KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH), Instituto Superior Tecnologico in Portugal (IST) and Aalto University school of Science and Technology in Finland. It is a two-year Master`s programme including compulsory mobilty for the students. Students enter at KTH or Aalto University and continue in the second year at one of the other two institutions.

The euSYSBIO programme offers education of high international standard as well as cultural experience from two different European countries and a double degree from two universities.

Admission process and decision (2 stage process)

* research colloquium and the ensuing choice and recommendation by the rapporteurs will take place on February 7, 2011
* the final decision of the Executive Board will be made on February 9, 2011

Type of funding and amount
The grant amounts to 1.000,- Euro per month, children`s allowance amounts to 100,- Euro per month in addition.

Period of funding and of approval
Max. 36 months of funding are provided, whereas the period of first approval comprises 12 months. We offer 2 times for prolongation – each comprising 12 months - after having reviewed the progress reports.

Interruption
In case of illness the grant will be paid for further 6 weeks. In case of pregnancy the grant payment will be intermitted for a time period of 14 weeks (6 weeks before and 8 weeks after childbirth). The approval may be extended for this period of time respectively.

Secondary employment
During the funding period a short-time work of max. 6 hours per week is allowed

Duties of the grantee

* participation in the structured doctoral training programme of the Research School, follow the Individual Training and Supervision Plan of the Research School, take actively part in the Research School
* communicate immediately all important changes of the personal conditions as well as interruptions, changes or abandonment of the research project

University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarships are tenable for study towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Canterbury.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a scholarship, an applicant must have met the academic requirements for enrolment in the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Canterbury on 10 December (for those applying by 15 October), or 15 June (for those applying by 15 May) in the year of application.

Students already enrolled for the PhD at the University may apply for a scholarship, although this will normally be considered only for students in their first or second year of study.

Developing Countries VLIR-UOS Scholarships for Students

Overview

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow a master or training programme in Belgium. These scholarships cover all related expenses. Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master students and 70 scholarships to training participants.

All programmes are specifically designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil society (e.g. universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, governments).

The target group for master programmes comprises students from developing countries. Training programmes are tailored to people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience.

Although these programmes are primarily oriented towards students and professionals from developing countries, they are also open to other people.

Applicants applying for both academic admission and a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements and the scholarship criteria. Applicants applying for academic admission but not for a scholarship simply need to fulfill only the admission requirements of the host university running the programme.

The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection, but the most important academic selection criteria are relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the developing country. The academic admission requirements are specific to every programme. Please peruse the requirements from the relevant programme.

A joint selection committee of VLIR-UOS and the host university is responsible for selecting scholarships. The host university – not the applicant – forwards the scholarship applications to the VLIR-UOS secretariat if the academic admission requirements are met. Monash University Fully funded PhD Studentship in Dendrimer Synthesis

Overview

We seek an outstanding PhD candidate with a background in synthetic organic chemistry to develop a new class of dendritic molecules, and to study their applications. The position is fully funded, both fees and stipend, for four years.

Project description

The successful candidate will investigate a new method for the synthesis of a library of dendrimers with variations in the sizes and shapes of the monomers, and of the strength and character of the forces between them. One aim of the project is to make dendrimers carrying a variety of functionality, and with the flexibility of the synthetic strategy, engineer the molecules for solubility, surface activity, and assembly into larger structures.

Measurement of the conformations of the dendrimers using Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) is part of the project, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience with this method at the Australian Synchrotron, collocated with Monash University. Computer models for the dendrimer conformations will be tested by the SAXS methods.

Monash University has Australia's leading chemistry school, ranking 64th in Shanghai's Jiao Tong Index. Monash is one of only three Australian universities ranked in the global top 100 for Chemistry, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Institut D'Optique Graduate School Master Scholarship in Optics in Science and Technology

Learning Objectives and outcomes

Students enrolled in the two-year programme will study in two different countries of their choice, spending one year in each and offering the opportunity to acquire 60 European Credit Transfer System units (ECTS) per year. Students are trained for technical or scientific positions in academic or industrial environment specialised in optics or using optics. PhD studies are a natural extension of the Course.

Mobility scheme: each student spends the first year at one of the five sites and the second year at one of the other four sites.

The language of instruction is English. Students are offered the possibility to learn the local language as part of the programme. Courses are taught by research staff members. The student population is multinational with a professor/student ratio of about 2.

Erasmus Mundus grants for non-EU students ("Category A" from 2010-11)

OpSciTech is one of the Master Courses selected by the prestigious Erasmus Mundus framework of the European Commission through which students from non-European Uni0n countries are eligible for two-year grants of € 24,000 per year. For 2010/2011, a total of 10 Erasmus Mundus grants are available for these students ("general category") and additionally 1 or 2 specifically for students from "special windows", namely Western Balkans and Turkey. EM grants are awarded on the basis of merit by the European Commission under proposition of the OpSciTech board.

For whom does this apply?

Students from non-EU countries are defined as:

nationals coming from all countries other than the 27 EU Member States

who are not residents of any of the above countries

who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries.

Additionally, for 2010/11, the extra-grant "special windows" is reserved for students from:

Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99, Montenegro, Serbia) and Turkey.

Erasmus Mundus grants for European students ("Category B" from 2010-11)

For 2010/2011, a total of 8 Erasmus Mundus grants of maximum € 23,000 for two years are available for students from the 27 EU members, or from the AELE – i.e. from Iceland, Liechtenstein or from Norway – on condition that their institution of origin is not a Partner of the OpSciTech Consortium. EM grants are awarded on the basis of merit by the European Commission under proposition of the OpSciTech board.

"Regular" Erasmus Grants:
EU students can apply for an Erasmus student grant. However, the Erasmus student grant cannot cover the totality of the 2-year OpSciTech programme. In practice, the university in which the European student starts the OpSciTech programme may grant an Erasmus student grant for the student's study period at the second hosting institution within the Erasmus Mundus Masters consortium. Erasmus student grant can cover a mobility period of 12 months maximum (~1,500 €/year). EU students already enrolled in the last year of their Bachelor programme (or equivalent) in any of the partner institutions of the OpSciTech consortium can apply for an Erasmus student grant from their 1st year spent abroad out of their institution of origin.

SPIE scholarships (SPIE, international society for advancement of science and application of light) Through 2009 SPIE has distributed over $2.8 million in scholarships to 1,233 students across 86 countries. Overview

The Erasmus Mundus master's programme in Systems Biology (euSYSBIO) is a cooperation between KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH), Instituto Superior Tecnologico in Portugal (IST) and Aalto University school of Science and Technology in Finland. It is a two-year Master's programme including compulsory mobilty for the students. Students enter at KTH or Aalto University and continue in the second year at one of the other two institutions.

The euSYSBIO programme offers education of high international standard as well as cultural experience from two different European countries and a double degree from two universities.

Overview

Macquarie University International Scholarships are available across most courses to cover international tuition fees for study on campus at North Ryde in an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree. Empa is an interdisciplinary research and services institution for material sciences and technology development within the ETH Domain. Its Laboratory for Mechanical Systems Engineering is looking for strengthening its composite materials development activities and offers a Postdoc position in Carbon Nanotube based Composites.

The work will focus on the development of nano-particle modified fibre reinforced polymer composites by modification of the system with nano-particles, specifically carbon nano-tubes (CNT). The purpose of the project led by the candidate is to improve resin dominated properties of fibre composite materials, like ILSS, toughness and impact resistance. The work will cover aspects such as functionalisation of the fillers, processing issues and characterisation from the nano- to the macroscopic scale.

The ideal candidate (m/f) is a communicative chemist, chemical engineer, material scientist or physicist with a PhD degree. The candidate should bring practical experience in the field of nanocomposites, including the specific characterisation methods, preferably on CNT-epoxy systems. Furthermore, the candidate should already have lead a scientific project.

Research Description

Cloud Computing is a paradigm for enabling remote, on-demand access to a set of configurable computing resources. A Cloud may stand at different levels of the hardware and software stack where:
(i) an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud enables access to hardware resources such as servers and storage devices.

(ii) a Platform as a Service (PaaS) cloud allows the access to software resources such as operating systems and software development environment, and

(iii) a Software as a Service (SaaS) cloud is an alternative to classical software applications running locally on personal computers which are, instead, provided remotely by the cloud (e.g. messaging services, document editing services, etc.). Although Cloud Computing provides a means to support remote, on-demand access to computing resources, its ad-hoc management poses significant challenges to the scalability, performance, dependability and economical costs of cloud services.

A differentiating element between Cloud Computing environments will be the quality-of service (QoS) and the service level agreement (SLA) provided by the cloud. However, service composition and cloud elasticity that underlie Cloud Computing make cloud management challenging. The proposed PhD project aims at investigating novel protocols for scalabile and efficient cloud provisioning, while guaranteeing dependability and reducing costs. The project will study an innovative approach that combines control theory techniques with distributed algorithms in order to build self-elastic clouds. Novel models, control laws, and distributed algorithms will be proposed for automated provisioning, configuration and deployment of cloud services to meet SLA requirements, while tackling scalability and dynamics issues.

Jacobs University Bremen PhD Stipend in Machine Learning-Stochastic Systems Modeling

In the Machine Learning Group of Herbert Jaeger at Jacobs University Bremen, funding is available for a 3-year PhD stipend, starting in August 2010 or later. The stipend amounts to 1000 Euro / month. The PhD research under this stipend offers great freedom, because it is not tied to a funded project. There are only two constraints: the research should have a strong mathematical / analytical flavor, and it should contribute to the further development of observable operator models (OOMs).

Indicative topics. OOMs are an approach to model arbitrary stochastic processes with linear operators. This leads, on the one hand, to a general mathematical theory of stochastic processes in terms of linear algebra concepts. On the other hand, it leads to novel learning algorithms for stochastic system identification. OOM research in our group has always been heading into both of these two directions – mathematical theory, and practical (but mathematically well-founded) learning algorithms. It is up to the successful candidate to select an area in OOM research of his/her liking, after a decent time of initial training. Here is a choice of exemplary topics, where initial work has been done and which wait for a motivated craftsperson (or genius) to be further pursued:

Working out the connections between the formalism of quantum mechanics and OOMs. Both formalisms have conspicuous structural similarities, and there is hope they can be unified. This could lead to efficient algorithms for learning quantum models from observation data.

Develop novel methods for reinforcement learning and agent decision making. OOMs are closely related to predictive state representations, a recent innovation in reinforcement learning and agent modeling. We have a torso of a conceptually new approach to learning of optimal decision making in stochastic environments, waiting to be worked out.

Develop a theory which unifies stochastic grammars with stochastic processes. Grammar models of random sequences afford a structural analysis of such sequences, while process models lead to temporal analyses. It is an open and fundamental question how the two are related, with great potential impact on biosequence and speech analysis. Initial insights have been obtained in the group.

Extend the current core OOM formalism, which is defined using un-normed vector spaces, to a Hilbert space based theory. At least two ways of how this can be done have already been outlined. A completion of this line of research would lead to a deeper understanding of important statistical issues, especially concerning the approximation of high(or infinite-)dimensional models by low-dimensional ones.

Develop efficient online learning algorithms for OOMs. Currently only offline algorithms are statistically and computationally efficient; the few known online learning algorithms are inefficient to the degree of being useless in practice.

Requirements.

Simple to state: very good math skills, a formal-analytical mindset, and an interest in interdisciplinary exposure. It is not important (but of course gladly accepted) to have previous experience in probability or stochastic processes, but fluency in general math thinking and formula-writing and proof-finding is expected. A Master (or equivalent) degree in a suitable field would be the default formal requirement, but exceptionally motivated BSc degree holders will also be considered – and filed into the integrated PhD track of Jacob`s freshly founded Mathematics, Modeling, and Computing research center.

Working environment.

Our machine learning group, which currently comprises 4 PhD students and 2 postdocs, pursues two major fields of research: recurrent neural networks of the reservoir computing flavor, and the modeling of stochastic dynamical systems with OOMs. Roughly speaking, the neural network research tends more to the engineering and applications side, while the OOM work is more foundational and mathematical. The group is coordinating the European project ORGANIC, which is about complex and partly biologically inspired architectures for speech recognition based on recurrent neural networks. Furthermore, the group is a partner in the European AMARSi consortium, which is is about biologically inspired architectures for humanoid robot motor control, again using recurrent neural networks. Finally, there is a project funded by the German National Research Society (DFG) which concerns OOM architectures for analyzing high-dimensional stochastic data, for instance from neural recordings, EEG, brain imaging, or gene regulation dynamics. Besides the intense working relationships with European groups afforded by these projects, we also enjoy a regular exchange of ideas (and sometimes, students) with world leading researchers in machine learning, especially Joshua Bengio and Richard Sutton.

Our group meets several times a week for extended study and discussion of the research we are doing ourselves, and of relevant developments in the neighboring disciplines: computational neuroscience, cognitive science, robotics, AI, bio-informatics, statistical physics, and more. This breadth of exposure reflects the interdisciplinary history of the group itself, and its current embedding in multidisciplinary large-scale projects.

Jacobs University is a special place: Germany`s only full-fledged private university (with about 20 majors from the natural sciences, the social sciences and humanities, and engineering). Founded only 10 years ago, in some disciplines Jacobs has already reached the top position in the CHE ranking, Germany`s most relevant university ranking. Students from more than 90 nations make Jacobs one of the most international universities on this planet. The campus language is English (also of course in our group). And our campus is beautiful.

Bremen is an ancient trading and harbor town close to the North Sea. It used to be Germany`s port for coffee, cacao and wine, from which times a culture of open-mindedness has been preserved – it is easy to feel welcome in this town and its environments. Costs of living are among the lowest in Germany (average rent per square meter for small-to-medium-sized flats is about 6 Euros; Jacobs runs its own student accomodations which are even cheaper).

Prolongation and transformation of stipend.

After the research topic is settled, the project will be submitted for funding to the DFG. The outcome of this will become known at about the end of the second year; if positive, the stipend will be transformed into a work contract with a regular salary, and from then on continue for 2 (+1) years. If an external grant cannot be secured, a prolongation beyond three years cannot be guaranteed, but everything will be done to arrange this if the PhD project is not finished after three years (I don`t think that a very good PhD thesis is typically achievable within 3 years if there is a demanding working-in phase involved, as I would expect in this case). This project will be carried out in collaboration with Prof Bernt-Erik Saether (NTNU, Trondheim, Norway) and Dr Stephanie Jenouvrier (CNRS, France & WHOI, USA).

Project description:

The aim of the project is to develop an eco-evolutionary population dynamic model for the great tit to predict the effects of climate change on population viability. We will use climate projections from selected Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models (AOGCMs) for a range of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenarios to predict the phenology of the birds (taking evolutionarily processes into account) and of their prey (taking ecological processes into account). The resulting phenological (mis)match will affect demographic rates and thereby population viability. Ultimately, we will calculate the critical rate of climate change that populations can cope with.

Requirements:

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a PhD in Population Ecology, Evolutionary Ecology or Animal Ecology and with mathematical modelling and statistical skills. A limited amount of fieldwork may be part of the project.

Appointment:

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum of 2 years. This position would concern theoretical/numerical modelling of combustion dynamics. The aim of the modelling work is to establish physical-sound mathematical models which are capable to shed some light on present issues for reliable design of combustion. An unresolved fundamental issue is the relative importance of hydrodynamics (turbulence) compared to chemical kinetics on the combustion process. First, the mathematical and physical structure of the advection-reaction-diffusion equation that is typical for combustion phenomena will be studied.

In a second time, the complete compressible Navier-Stokes equation and the modelled reaction-diffusion equation previously analysed will be coupled. The work will use various experiments as basis for verifying the modelling. The experiments will be mainly from experimental research carried out at the department by the means of a rapid-compression machine.

The work will be carried out in collaboration with the University of Rome `La Sapienza`.

You will design and fabricate a magnetic tweezers setup to generate appropriate external magnetic fields and integrate this with a state-of-the-art fluorescence microscope. You will perform Brownian dynamics simulations and develop an experimental model system based on artificial membranes in order to characterize the physical aspects of protein manipulation using MNPs. You will assess various techniques (optical and non-optical) to visualize the magnetically induced changes in protein/MNP distributions. Finally you will apply the method to study receptor aggregation dynamics in T-cells.

Research

The aim in this project is to develop an innovative biophysical approach based on the use of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) that will allow us to exert forces on, and actively manipulate, individual receptor proteins on the surface of living cells using smart external magnetic fields. It is anticipated that active manipulation of these receptor proteins will provide a very powerful tool that will give new insights into biophysical processes in cells. Exploring the physics of this new technology is the primary objective. To demonstrate the power of this biophysical method, it will be applied to address key issues in cell signaling. By controlling the aggregation of membrane-associated receptor molecules, the state of immune system T cells can be actively switched from an `inactive` to an `active state`, thereby mimicking a process that is crucial in cell signaling.

The work will be carried out in the Biophysical Engineering Group, which has a long-standing experience in developing physical tools to study biology on the molecular and cellular scale. The group has a well equipped laboratory with a wide variety of both home-build and commercial setups such as AFM, optical tweezers, magnetic tweezers, FLIM, TIRF and CLSM. The current project builds on the vast experience of the group in the application of magnetic tweezers to cell biophysics (see e.g. a.h.b.deVries et al., 2007, Nano Letters 7:1424-1427). You can expect to be part of a team of enthusiastic and inspiring colleagues. The research group is part of the MIRA Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine and the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, and participates in the new Twente Graduate School. For the application of the method on living cells we will collaborate with prof. C.G. Figdor from the NCMLS at the Radboud University of Nijmegen.

Requirements
We are looking for an experimentalist with a background in experimental (bio-) physics, who is interested to work in the new and rapidly developing field of nanobiophysics.

Conditions of Employment
When fulfilling a PhD position at the FOM foundation, you will get the status of junior scientist.

Project Description

The need to reduce the rise in the CO2 concentration of the atmosphere has initiated the development of techniques aiming at reducing the CO2 emission from power plants and other point sources. One of these techniques is to capture CO2 at the point source and then inject it in pressurized form as a supercritical liquid into depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, in the deep ocean or in deep saline aquifers. Little attention has so far been paid on the possible impacts of CO2 storage on the shallowgroundwater systems which frequently are exploited for drinking water and feed streams and wetlands. The acidification caused by CO2 entering the aquifer from below could mobilize trace metals and the higher levels of bicarbonate might desorb phosphate and arsenate deteriorating drinking water and surface water quality. Increased rates of mineral dissolution could increase aquifer permeability leading to rapid transport of contaminants. Field based studies elucidating these aspects are clearly needed.

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship in the area of groundwater geochemistry related to potential effects of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) The PhD position will be funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research, in the research project Environmental Technology For Geological Storage Of Carbon Dioxide running 2010-2013.

The PhD project will investigate the consequences of high CO2 concentrations entering into aquifers through a combination of laboratory column experiments and field experiments in aquifers. Geochemical modeling should be an integral part of the experimental planning and interpretation and extrapolation of the results.

Qualifications
For this position we seek a PhD candidate with a Master`s degree in aquatic geochemistry or a related field. Experience with laboratory and field investigations as well as geochemical modeling will be advantageous. We expect good communication skills, both verbally and in writing. The position is open to both international and Danish candidates.

The PhD project will be carried out at DTU Environment www.env.dtu.dk in close collaboration with GEUS (Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland) (www.geus.dk).

Approval and Enrolment
The PhD candidate will be enrolled at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU Environment and be part of the large and divers group of PhD students there. The full scholarship will be for an enrollment period of 3 years.

Theme: Reporting New Realities: Beyond the Economic Crisis

The shock of the global financial crisis and renewed commitment to addressing climate change pose new realities for countries around the world. Leaders at the APEC Summit in Singapore in November 2009 stated `We cannot go back to `growth as usual` or `trade as usual.` The post-crisis landscape will be different. We need a new growth paradigm. We need a fresh model of economic integration.` But what will such models look like, and how are countries positioned to implement them?

Participants in the Spring 2010 Jefferson Fellowships will explore new realities in the U.S.- Asia Pacific region in the wake of the shock of the global economic crisis and in the face of the growing challenge of climate change. This special Jefferson Fellowships program will begin with one week of dialogue sessions at the East-West Center in Honolulu, followed by an opportunity to attend the East-West Center`s 2nd International Media Conference in Hong Kong on the theme `Reporting New Realities in theAsia Pacific Region.` The conference will provide on-the-ground updates on news and media issues throughout the world`s most dynamic region through keynote speakers, panels of journalists and other professionals, plenary sessions with regional experts, and media workshops.

Participants will then travel to Shanghai and Jakarta to explore some of these new realities. China and Indonesia are countries with huge populations and rising influence in theAsia Pacific region. As members of the G-20, they both have a seat at the new international table to discuss the future of global governance. Yet both are still developing countries that are seeking a model of sustainable economic growth in the face of new global economic realities, regional power balances and climate change. Participants will visit Shanghai in advance of the opening of the World Expo on the theme `Better City, Better Life` to explore the significance of the Expo for China and for Shanghai, the new Chinese-U.S. relationship, and how China is moving forward with its economic recovery and future development. In Jakarta, participants will explore the under-reported `new reality` of democratic and economic transition in the world`s fourth most populous country and the largest Muslim democracy. They will examine the many challenges that lie ahead for the multi-ethnic, multi-lingual country to develop a robust, effective democracy and economic growth in a challenging new global landscape.

Who Can Apply:
Working print, broadcast, and online journalists in the United States, the Pacific Islands, and Asia with a minimum of five years of professional experience. Applicants must have the ability to communicate in English in a professional, multi-cultural environment.

Funding:
The Jefferson Fellowships are supported from a grant from The Freeman Foundation. The grant funds economy class, roundtrip airfare to and from Honolulu, Hawaii as well as program-related air and ground transportation, lodging, and meals for participating journalists. A modest per diem is also provided. Participants are responsible for all applicable visa fees and any additional visa-related expenses.

News organizations are also asked to support their employees` participation by cost-sharing whenever possible. An `Employers Statement of Support` is a required part of the application. While financial assistance from the employer is not required, employers are encouraged to provide support to their Jefferson Fellows as a demonstration of their commitment to the program.

HOW TO APPLY
Applicants must submit the Jefferson Fellowships application form and

1. A maximum three-page letter outlining your issues of interest, a brief description of your news organization, what you expect to accomplish if an award is granted and topics you propose to address in your paper and presentation at the East-West Center. It should be a topic that represents a perspective from your country/community related to the program theme.
2. A letter of recommendation on official letterhead from your supervisor describing your suitability for the Fellowship and the benefit the organization hopes to derive from your participation in the program.
3. Names, addresses, phone/fax numbers and e-mail of three people who may be contacted by the Center as references. Two of these references should be people outside your news organization.
4. The `Employer`s Statement of Support` form completed by your employer (form is included in the 3-page application).

The successful candidate will implement a research project on the weather insurance design. The project will be financed by Swiss National Science Foundation and an ETH Zurich internal PhD-grant. The objective of the project is to enhance the methodology of theweather insurance contract design considering conditions of limited relevance and applicability of historical data. The project will focus on the application of extremal dependence analysis and elaboration of the methodology for the utilization of a priori information available in the form of climate change projections. The project will be conducted based on historical data, climate change projections and results of crop simulation models for Kazakhstan where grain producers are especially prone to risk of drought.

The basic requirements are:
• A master degree in Mathematics, Economics, Agricultural Economics;
• Strong background in Probability Theory and quantitative methods;
• Programming skills;
• Good command of spoken and written English;

As the project will be implemented in collaboration with the scientists from Russia and Kazakhstan, knowledge of Russian would be an asset but is not a prerequisite.

The group is among the leading groups worldwide in power quality and has initiated several new research directions within this area. Integration of windpower in the electric power system is one of those directions where the group is leading new initiatives both in Sweden and in the rest of the world.

We are looking for a PhD student for an industry-sponsored project on harmonics and windpower. The project is part of the VindForsk program, see link below. The aim of the project is to map the various harmonic issues related with increasing amounts of windpower connected to the power system. The project consists of a combination of measurements and simulations. The measurements will be performed in cooperation with Skellefteå Kraft; cooperation with over network operators, windpower producers and manufacturers is also part of the project.

The main work is to be conducted at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå.

Qualifications and bases of assessment

Mamaself is a 2 year Master course.
Fellowships are now available for both Non-European and European students.

Master in Materials Science Exploiting Large Scale Facilities.
Mamaself is a 2 year full time Master aiming to promote the scientific collaboration between Universities, Large scale facilities and Industry. This Master is the result of the collaboration between four Universities: University Rennes 1, (France), University of Torino, (Italy), Technical University and the Ludwig Maximilians University München (Germany). The Master degree will be delivered by two or three out of the four universities, so the students will receive a double Master degree in Materials Science.

Each student will spend one year in a first hosting institution, the first semester of the second Master year at a second university and the last semester at a university or Large scale Faclities or at a partner institution in Japan, Switzerland or India.

Grants for Non-European students
For each academic year the consortium of universities selects non-European students who will receive a grant. Each non-European student will receive a grant of 22.000 euros per year. Deadline is for 2010-2012 : 19 .01.2010. Non EU students who spent a year in Europe before applying must applicate before 21 May 2010.

Grants for European students
In the framework of the Erasmus Mundus 2 programme, European students can apply for an EM fellowship of 12.000€. This grant amount includes the mobility grant for a period at one of the non EU partner institutions in Japan, Switzerland or India during the second semester of the second Master year. The program trains both researchers and professionals, able to operate at the highest levels of management of Cultural Heritage and Landscape, in both public and private institutions. The program integrates concepts and methods from several domains (humanities, economics, law, information technologies, material sciences) in the analysis of cultural heritage and landscape. The program provides a consistent multidisciplinary path where students are provided with competencies which nowadays cannot be obtained but through particular self-training initiatives. Political Systems and Institutional Change

The Ph.D. in Political Systems and Institutional Change is a multidisciplinary course analysing, in a comparative perspective, institutions in their historical, political, sociological, economic and legal features. Special attention will be devoted to processes of institutional change. The Ph.D. aims at forming political analysts able to: plan and manage collaborative and integrated processes at the international level; analyse and assess policies and institutional settings at a supranational, national and regional level; confront the specific problems of countries in transition towards democracy and a market economy.

Duration: 3 years

Language: Courses and seminars are held in English. Foreign Ph.D. students are required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.

Research work would lead to a M.Sc. degree of Trinity College, University of Dublin in the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science.

The Fluids, Vibration and Acoustics group in Trinity College, Dublin, have developed coherence-based noise source identification techniques which identify the contribution of core noise to near- and far-field acoustic measurements of aero-engines. The objective of the work within this studentship is to further develop these techniques with novel Beamforming algorithms and to apply them to experimental and full scale engine data generated within an EU Framework 7 project. Of particular interest is the implementation of these techniques to broad-band noise identification and the study of non-linear interaction mechanisms. The scope of the work will entail designing and conducting in-house experiments, performing simulations with theoretically generated data and developing novel signal processing techniques. There will be opportunities to spend time in the test locations of some of our EU partners within the programme.

Applicants should have a good honours degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline with some background in acoustics and signal processing being an advantage. The scholarship will be for 1.5/2years and will include remuneration of 16k euro per annum and academic fees.

The Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in this project will work on measures to restore the interbank markets that are crucial for banks’ liquidity management, but mostly dried up during the crisis. The current external risk reporting of banks lacks credibility because the reported values at risk (VaR) turned out to be very small in relation to the reported depreciations on bank assets.

The project is divided in several steps.

The first step is to find out why the reported VaR were so misleading; is it because the underlying stochastic models are ignoring systemic risks, or because the time horizon of the underlying model is too short?

Second, can VaR be sufficiently improved to credibly communicate a bank’s risk? If not, can stress tests be designed for that purpose? A more demanding approach is to combine different pieces of information that banks publish, which taken separately, might be insufficient, but when put together may be sufficient information for interbank lending. This requires research on the synergies of different pieces of information and empirical testing. This research should be of a theoretical and empirical nature.

Third, the issue of quick changes in banks’ risk through derivatives trading needs to be addressed. Should banks report these big trades or should such trades be restricted to banks with stricter equity capital requirements?

Fourth, the ESR should differentiate systematic and non-systematic risk factors in bank risk positions to provide more precise insights into potential damages of lending to another bank.

The overall aim of CREAM is to develop and experimentally validate a suite of mechanistic effect models that are based on Good Modelling Practice. It is well understood that natural populations carry a wealth of molecular variation. While it has been assumed for a long time that most of this variation is neutral, there is increasing evidence that a large proportion is functionally different and thus subjected to different evolutionary forces.

After the first phase in the genomics projects, which were focusing on the sequencing of one genome for each species, the emphasis has now shifted to the genome wide characterization of natural variation. In particular the new generation of sequencing technology (454, Solexa etc.) is contributing to a hitherto unprecedented wealth of information about naturally occurring sequence variation. Nevertheless, the advances in cataloging natural variation are not matched with our advances in understanding the functional differences among the naturally occurring alleles.

In the PhD program Population Genetics, we are aiming to train a new generation of scientists that is able to deal with this new challenge. The institute consists experimental as well as theoretical research groups spaning a wide range of the expertise from new sequencing technologies to bioinformatics to functional testing.

The research group Microbial Ecology is part of the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen. The group studies the adaptive strategies of prokaryotic microorganisms that allow these to survive in complex natural habitats. One of the topics focuses on the role of microbial diversity in ecosystem functioning. The research is strongly multidisciplinary and includes microbiology, ecology, molecular biology and plant physiology and ecology. The group provides a lively and internationally oriented scientific environment with excellent facilities.

Project

A major goal in general ecology is to understand the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning. Ecological theory predicts that ecosystems with a higher diversity of species are more productive and more stable in the face of stresses and environmental fluctuations. Amongst the different components of biodiversity, the diversity of functional traits of species in a community is considered to be the best predictor of the related ecosystem process. In this context, we recently used experimental communities of bacterial species to evaluate the role of bacterial functional diversity on community processes. Diversity had indeed a positive effect on community function and we were able to demonstrate the relevance of the complementarity of species for resource use capacity in shaping biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships.

he main goal of this PhD project is to use a similar model system to address the role of bacterial diversity in respect of the stability of the communities. You will be responsible for designing experiments with bacterial communities to test theories related to the diversity-stability relationship. You will apply classical microbiological methods to determine community functioning. You will develop and apply molecular methods for the quantification of bacterial species, as well as statistical models to untangle the effects of diversity components on community stability. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Microbial Ecology center (UMR5557, Université Lyon1) in Lyon, France.

Requirements

You have a Masters degree or equivalent degree in microbiology/ microbial ecology, with a strong background in general ecology or in ecology with interest in working with microbial model systems. Experience with the application of molecular methods in the study of the complex communities is an advantage. The project is demanding and asks for dedication as well as a creative mind. Good proficiency of the English language is required. The Ph.D. candidate is expected to attend a few courses and to assist in teaching students at different levels (10% of time).

Accommodations

International High School Student Scholarships fot International Student

Every semester, TUJ awards academic merit scholarships to talented graduates of international high schools providing English-based education in Japan. Students whose academic achievements indicate they are well prepared to excel at TUJ are encouraged to apply. Students may apply for a scholarship within one year of their high school graduation.

Scholarships are awarded for eight semesters. To continue receiving the scholarship, students must be enrolled in classes full-time, make progress toward degree completion within the Temple University system, and maintain a 3.0 GPA. Students may use their scholarships at any of Temple University's campuses around the world after they have completed four semesters at TUJ.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Fellows work full-time for one year with Human Rights Watch in New York, Washington, D.C., or London (Aryeh Neier fellows will work full-time, for an additional year, at the ACLU). Fellows monitor human rights developments in various countries, conduct on-site investigations, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy aimed at publicizing and curtailing human rights violations. Past fellows have conducted research and advocacy on numerous different issues in countries all over the world. A few recent examples are: a project on the rights of Iraqi refugees in Syria and Lebanon; on violations of the rights of girls in juvenile custody in New York State; on corporal punishment of children in southern public schools in the US; on the rights of Bhutanese refugees in Nepal and India; on abuses against Sri Lankan migrant domestic workers; and abuses committed in the context of the Naxal conflict in Chhattisgarh state, India.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have exceptional analytic skills, an ability to write and speak clearly, and a commitment to work in the human rights field in the future.
